Dr. Belinda Deneen Wallace will present on Friday April 13, 2012 at 12:00 P.M. in Africana Studies lounge (4th Floor Mesa Vista Hall)
Title of Presentation: Postcolonial Femininity in Contemporary Jamaican Culture
Abstract: This presentation examines the ways in which contemporary female artists negotiate post-colonial femininity in contemporary Jamaican culture. Through an examination of the works of dancehall artist Lady Saw and poet Tanya Shirley, this presentation is interested in an evaluation of post-colonial femininities as re-inscriptive and resistance sites of influence; and, via this evaluation, it further examines how these sites of influence illustrate a complex relationship (one that is dynamic, competing and often shifting) that challenges and redefines established notions of post-colonial femininity and femaleness.
